It is normal for our children to be sick from the ages of 3-5 years of age. This is when they are being exposed to more things and their immune systems have an opportunity to develop and strengthen. Ideally, we want to encourage this chance for their bodies to do just that, however, when they are miserable there are ways, we can assist in supporting them through the illness.
Cough
- Take a walk, the cool air can help reduce swelling and open airways
- Keep hydrated
- Consider an oil on one’s chest (eucalyptus)
- Consider elevating the head/pillow while sleeping
- Spongia Tosta homeopathically (croupy cough) – I love having this homeopathic remedy kit, it comes with a guide to look up your symptoms and find the best remedy to match and also gets you started and familiar with a basic 30 remedies! I carry one kit with me at all times in my purse and have a second kit in our family’s first aid box.

Congestion
- Diffuse an oil 10 minutes in the room before bed (thieves, eucalyptus, spice of life)
- Steam up the bathroom but turning on the HOT shower and breathe in that warm, moist air
- Baby – try skin on skin contact
- Nebulizer with colloidal silver – this assists to remove bacteria in the mouth and breathing airways. I believe it has saved us a handful of middle of the night emergency room visits when my kids had that croupy cough and were wheezing to breathe.
- Elevate at night with a pillow
Fever (remember a fever is the body’s way of heating up to kill off any foreign bacteria, virus, invaders in the body that are not wanted… we want to encourage the fever to do its job and not to hinder or stop it)
- Keep hydrated
- Belladonna homeopathically – every 15 minutes until symptoms subside
- Peppermint essential oil can be applied to the feet to help cool the temp a little
